What is Engagement?

Bringing more voices to the table

Engagement happens when you meet with a stakeholder or a group of stakeholders to bring their perspective into your work. Really trying to see their point of view can shape your work or transform stakeholder buy-in.

What is Communications’ role in engagement?

At UBC, Campus & Community Planning (C&CP) are the experts in community engagement, and the IAP2’s deceptively simple five-stage model helps us understand what type of engagement will have the best outcome for your project:

  • Inform – letting people know what is happening
  • Consult – gather a diversity of inputs to inform decision making
  • Involve –  make people a component of the decision making body
  • Collaborate –  create aligned or interconnected systems
  • Partner –  create a shared system

Campus & Community Planning also share their Engagement Charter, which gives more detail on the best practices for engagement at UBC.

In the VPFO we partner with C&CP on larger community consultation initiatives and utilize their model when working on initiatives within our portfolio.
